Watching movies at home was at one time cool, all you needed to do was rewind the tape and fast forward through the advertisements and the upcoming attractions to get to the beginning of the movie. But at least you got to watch the movie you so desired, at least it was better than flipping on the TV and looking to see what the movie of the week was on one of the three channels. At least you had the option.
VHS was the greatest there was for a long time and rewinding wasn’t awful, I guess, especially if you had one of those rewinding devices that they used to sell. A few of them were cool; they were in the shapes of cars and other stuff. That was kind of cool, in an eighties sort of way.
I feel bad for children in this day and age that don’t have to put up with the same types of aggravation. They’ll never know how irritating it is to wait for a movie to rewind when you have to return it by eight o’clock or get charged a late fee. They will never be familiar with the aggravation of a tape malfunctioning and not being able to ever look at it again or a fifty dollar VHS tape. These are all things that were part of watching a movie in the good old times. Now the formats have changed at least three times since then.
The majority of individuals don’t make use of VHS as their primary method of viewing movies at home. Sure, many individuals still own one, but it’s relegated to the children’s videos and old stuff. It’s not the primary movie watching equipment.
