The capital of Vietnam, with its blend of East and West, has a lot to offer travellers spending a few days in the city. How best to spend your time cheaply and effectively? Here are five great things to do in Hanoi:
Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
Vietnam’s great leader, Ho Chi Minh, is a revered god-like figure in his home nation where his portrait hangs proudly in the homes of many of its families. Where better to get a sense of his significance than at his final resting place? Entombed, like Lenin, against his wishes, you can take a peek at the great man without forking out a penny. The best gap year history lesson?
Temple of Literature & Ngoc Son Temple
What would Hanoi be without its temples? Head south of the Mausoleum to the Temple of Literature, one of the city’s oldest (built in 1070) and also the site of the country’s first university six years later. Couple that with a visit to Ngoc Son, a lovely little pagoda extending out onto the lake, for more temple action. Be careful not to trip over the giant turtle display inside!
Hoan Kiem Lake
Cheap, cheerful and relaxing, a stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake is a must for any traveller passing through Hanoi on a gap year. Located in the centre of town, in walking distance from most hostels, it’s a great spot for watching locals practice tai chi in the morning or to sit reading in the afternoon. You’ll probably wonder what the deal is with the locals wearing pajamas too. A fashion trend to introduce back home?
Water Puppet Theatre
Not quite Thunderbirds, Hanoi’s Water Puppet Theatre is one of the main tourist gems of the city. Don’t be put off though, it’s a tradition that is still very much a must see. Watch as live musicians accompany folk legends of Vietnamese history, told with wooden men, women and dragons dancing on the face of the water. Tickets are cheap and you can drink beer while you watch!
Night Market
Probably the best place to stock up on the essentials you need for continuing your gap year travels, the Old Quarter’s night market kicks off at 7pm and has anything from pirated DVDs to traditional ornaments for you to buy. Watch out for elevated prices and haggle like your life depends on it!
