It is presented as “a” log in sepia tones, amid which the parade scenes.

For the record (before the great story), this “journal page” is so well done that I did not hit right away where the menu was: o)

The central characters — —

Paris under the Occupation. Resistance fighters commit more or less individually attacks, no real organization.
We meet, gradually, the hero.
The couple Jar Alexander (Alexandru Potocean) Bancic and Olga (Olga Legrand): Romanian exiles, they are parents of a little Dolores.
Rayman (Robinson Stevenin) and her little brother Simon (Leopold Szabatura) it does not give an inch, whereas it is safe at his side. Impulsive, passionate about swimming, it is often endangered by reckless acts.
Monique Stern (Lola Naymark), the buxom redhead and “girlfriend” of Marcel, both naive and not interested… “heroin” for 2 cents.
Thomas Elek (Gregoire Leprince-Ringuet), son of Hungarian immigrants communist student at the Lycee Louis-Legrand. His mother (Ariane Ascaride) is a restaurant. His father claimed to be intellectual.
Henri Krasucki (Adrien Jolivet) yes, THE gatouillant Crab-Zucker’s “Bébête-Show”, much better known for his union activities as for his feats of strength – and yet… almost inseparable from Rayman. It is very suspicious vis-à-vis Monique Stern… correctly?
Missak Manouchian (Simon Abkarian), orphaned Armenian genocide of 1915, militant communist active but primarily intellectual and poet, and his wife Mélinée (Virginie Ledoyen), who trembles constantly for her husband and would like to see him ease off on its activism (to which she is also involved in printing leaflets).

Alexander and Olga must leave their little Dolores in nurse to devote himself fully to the resistance.
Missak Manouchian was first arrested at his home. To avoid involving Mélinée, he pretends to be “the downstairs neighbor.”
He was transferred, along with other activists in a camp Cormeil.
He will not leave after signing some “solemn declaration”. The others did not return alive.
Thomas Elek draws sickles and hammers on the walls of his high school and distribute leaflets.
At the announcement, Henry, the arrest of his father, his internment in a camp of Beaune-la-Rolande and his probable deportation, Marcel begins to kill the Germans on the pretext that ‘s no fire to light his cigarette.
Everyone is so little business in his corner, which eventually annoy Boczov Petra and more wheels on terrorism, and intimately order at all these people to come together in an “army”, with hierarchy, organization and equipment.
Marcel will take his terrorist role to heart. Henri Krasucki also.
Missak the poet, the man with “ethics”, will have to learn to kill, and heads the group, which was later dubbed “Army of Crime” on an idea from Joseph Darnand.
The group is very effective but Petra still wants more… and what will happen will happen.
The small “shtetl” street Industrial Estate, will be upset.
We also know some representatives of police and militias of the time: Inspector Pujol (Jean-Pierre Darroussin), very ambiguous and confusing, at first small police chief of the 11th district, then recruited by the Commissioner David Young and ruthless, the “special squads” to radical methods.

I found this film very addictive.
The scenes of daily life are represented with simplicity and realism.
I felt close to the characters. The sound must be for many.
The film, despite its subject, is not as violent as one might think. It crosses both innocuous scenes, like a picnic, a ball game played by German soldiers in a park, an outdoor concert by officers occupants, and glances, silences that speak volumes more than would the explosions and gunfire repeatedly.
The scenes of torture, for example, although presented with restraint and modesty, never gory, are very hard for very good suggestions. We see a little blood, a bit of burnt flesh, we hear cries…
I particularly appreciated also some sequences of printing leaflets, where the girl plays the piano with his acolytes violinists of the Opera to cover the noise of roneo.
The roles are extremely well acted and the cast is, in my opinion, perfect. I never thought Darroussin, for example, for his role as a police officer… and it suits him like a glove. Same for Ivan Franek, who lends his mouth twisted Boczov.
Ariane Ascaride, she perfectly portrays a mother softly, which pretends to know nothing of the activities of his son.
As for Simon Abkarian and Virginie Ledoyen, they are a couple very solid, moving. It is far from Virginia pubs L’Oreal… and to his credit.
Alexandre Desplat’s music is very fair, nor intrusive nor redundant.
The director has come under criticism for not being quite faithful to the facts and have omitted certain details. Can you blame him? Is there a single film “historic” which traces the history exactly? I do not think so. Romanticize the reality has always been a difficult exercise. The film is, in my view be seen as such: a passage of fictionalized history. And especially not as a documentary.
“To draw closer to the truth of the deep commitment of foreigners in the French Resistance, I had to change some facts and upset the timing. This was necessary so that this true story become a legend for today, for it helps us to live here and now. ” Robert Guediguian.
Robert Guediguian, himself a father of Armenian, among others has produced “Marius and Jeannette (1998).
